The canal outside my work

Another interesting thing about the bikes here in China is that they are nearly all electric. This includes both bicycles and motorbikes. So because of that they are extremly quiet and creep up on you quite quickly. It's good because it reduces noise pollution, but means you have to be constantly on your guard as a pedestrian. When we first arrived in Shanghai, we thought that everyone was drifting through the streets with their motors off to save petrol or something...

I've booked my flight back to Australia for Andy and Jen's wedding. So it will be great to catch up with some of you and buy some necessary things before returning. My arrival and departure details are as follows:

Arrive Friday 29 September at 11.35am in Brisbane
Depart Wed 4 October at 8am from Brisbane

Have you got a list of "necessary" things? If so, what are they?

is that list opposed to the "interesting" things?

Perhaps 'necessary things' could be the toilets at my work. It's common toilets - comparable to those found in shopping centres in Australia.

I challenge anyone to have a "toilet experience" in this place that leaves you feeling satisfied. You have the following key points to remember:

1) no soap; not only no soap - but no soap dispenser - no evidence of ever being soap in the toilets...
2) no toilet paper; no toilet paper dispensers, and again - no evidence of there ever having been toiled paper used in the toilets...
3) no toilet seats - just "holes in the ground" - get ready for 'splashback' effect
4) toilets cannot 'accept' toilet paper (see 2 above) and will block if tried...

oooooo yeah. I'm going to have to time my toilet adventures.

...and - maybe you can't access the one basin because there's some office worker type doing his kitchen dishes in there....

interesting info there Andrew...

let's know what's happening when you're back (apart from going shopping) - it'll still be school holidays, so hopefully we'll get to see ya!

I meant necessry things as in what you were going to get when you were back here. Like cartons of beer and ... I dunno ... vegemite?

(Interestingly, I rarely eat vegemite in Australia, but ate it all the time in London and Tokyo)
